A new town. A new identity. Pregnant and alone. And far away from a past that can never find me.
River Wild.Moody. Sullen. A-hole.And my new neighbor.
I have no interest in befriending River. And he definitely doesn’t want to be befriended by me.
Then, he helps me rescue an abandoned dog. And, that day, I see something in his eyes that reflects back in my own. Sadness. Pain. Loneliness.
I know all of those things well.
An unwanted and unexpected friendship that somehow works. Then, without warning, it turns into something more.
River and I both have our secrets, and that’s okay. Because I understand him. And he understands me.
For the first time in my life, I have something I never thought I would have—happiness.
But happiness isn’t forever. Not for people like me.
Especially not when my past is waiting just around the corner, ready to come and take it all away.

Samantha Towle–one of my absolute go-to authors–kept me hooked with this romantic story of two people who desperately needed each other.

Carrie is running away from a horribly abusive husband to a small town in Texas. She’s pregnant, alone, and trying to make the best of it.

Her next door neighbor is a jerk. River is taciturn, grumpy, and just kind of an ass. But slowly but surely they become friends–sort of. River is the kind of man who isn’t really good at “friends”.

River has his own trauma from when he was young. And thanks to some non-linear storytelling, we find out what River’s damage is–and it’s awful. It makes perfect sense why this man is so closed off.

But it doesn’t take long for River to find Carrie’s openness and charm more than he can take. They become close friends, with always a little something more.

There’s just the small issue of Carrie’s ex and River’s secrets that get in the way.

These two complement each other in the most perfect way. Carrie is just the right amount of forceful with River. And River can’t seem to help himself in wanting to help Carrie and be there for her–no matter how much she gets on his nerves or under her skin.

This can be considered a slow-burn romance as these two, full of feelings, are both hesitant to make anything happen.

This was a beautiful story of finding your soulmate and family when you really thought that couldn’t happen for you. I absolutely fell in love with River and Carrie.
