The king’s scholar, the magus, believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure. To attain it for his king, he needs a skillful thief, and he selects Gen from the king’s prison. The magus is interested only in the thief’s abilities. What Gen is interested in is anyone’s guess. Their journey toward the treasure is both dangerous and difficult, lightened only imperceptibly by the tales they tell of the old gods and goddesses.
Megan Whalen Turner weaves Gen’s stories and Gen’s story together with style and verve in a novel that is filled with intrigue, adventure, and surprise.

Another book club read, I was super-excited to read this one!

So, going into it, I didn’t really know much. Just that it was a pretty popular book. After having read it, I can see why.

The way the author wrote these characters led me to read this book in constant wonder. From the first page I was lost as to what was going to happen–but completely enthralled.

Gen, our main character and thief, is one of the most humorous characters that I’ve read in awhile. He stands out as a guy that just doesn’t give a damn and he’s just along for the ride… But, there’s just so much more simmering under the surface!

This book was full of action and intrigue. I had a very fun time getting to the end. However, I will say that this reads as a kind of prelude to more. Which makes sense, as there are more in the series to follow.

If you do find yourself picking up this book, read carefully. Because at the end I found myself looking back and realizing all the little clues that Turner put in here added to the loveliness of this story.
