Yara Jones doesn't believe in sea monsters-until she becomes one. When a hurricane hits her island home and she wakes up with fins, Yara finds herself tangled up in an underwater world of mysterious merfolk and secretive selkies. Both sides believe Yara can save them by fulfilling a broken promise and opening the sealed gateway to their realm, but they are battling over how it should be done. The selkies want to take her life. The merfolk want something far more precious.
Treygan, the stormy-eyed merman who turned Yara mer, will stop at nothing and sacrifice everything to protect his people-until he falls for Yara. The tides turn as Yara fights to save herself, hundreds of sea creatures, and the merman who has her heart. She could lose her soul in the process-or she might open the gateway to a love that's deeper than the oceans.

I had NEVER read a mermaid story before, and I was a little apprehensive at first. I like a story where I can relate to the main character and really just get lost in everything that’s going on. I was worried that with this story, that wouldn’t be able to happen. I was so wrong! This book has taught me to keep a more open mind when it comes to books, because I could be missing some really great stories.

Yara and Treygan start off in the common “I-Can’t-Stand-You-But-I’m-Drawn-To-You”, complex relationship snarl. Although, given how Yara can be a little irritating in the beginning this is perfectly understandable. This was one of those situations where I could totally see why both people would be put off by the other.

Yara, who just found out her life would never be the same again was, understandably, a little panicked, and therefore, a little grating at times. And Treygan, who seems to not want to answer any of Yara’s questions, has a little bit of an attitude at the beginning.

But, once I got through about half of the book, I realized that this was just setting us up for the rest of the story. There’s a reason that not all of our questions are answered. There’s a reason the Selkies freak me out, and there’s a reason why Treygan treats Yara the way he does. And once I got to the real “meat” of the story, I could appreciate why Ms. Hooper took us there the way she did.

I appreciated the lore and mythology that was incorporated into the story. I really hope Ms. Hooper uses these, again, in her next Sea Monster Memoirs installment.

I definitely suggest reading this book. And I also suggest picking up the In His Eyes Anthology, which is free right now on Amazon. Ms. Hooper added a story from Treygan’s POV, and it totally made me appreciate his character all the more!

About Karen Amanda Hooper

I was born and bred in Baltimore, frolicked and froze in Colorado for a couple of years, and I'm currently sunning and splashing around Florida with my spoiled rescue dog. I'm addicted to coffee, chocolate and complicated happily-ever-afters.

There aren't enough hours in the day to keep up with my Goodreads shelves and lists, but I do occasionally try to add a book if I remember. Feel free to friend me. I love meeting other book lovers and seeing what people are reading!

  1. This one's been on my to-read list for a while, so I'm glad to see you enjoyed it! I've read a few mer books myself, but this one sounded unique and fun. I will definitely have to read it soon. Thanks for the review! And it's so cool that the author commented on this too, I'm fangirling right now!

    P.S. I'm a new follower here. 🙂
