Nila Jones has been dreaming about a young nobleman from the past; little did she know that he would become a significant part of her present. This is one of those few reviews that is just seriously difficult for me to write. Because I don’t like saying ANYTHING negative about any of the fabulous authors that I come into contact with. The thing is, I found myself just absolutely ADORING certain aspects of this book and then kind of scratching my head at others.
Let me just say that the story–the premise–of Birthright is absolutely fascinating. A girl who is essentially in love with a “boy from her dreams” before she’s actually even met him, just thrills me. There’s a creativity here and an openness from author, Ronda L. Caudill that made me devour this book in just a couple of days because it was so intense! I kept finding out clues to each little mystery one-by-one and I loved that! I loved that there was some intrigue and excitement to this story.
I love the characters. Nila and her “dream boy” made me root for them. Because I’m spoiler-free, I won’t get into HOW I rooted for them. But, let’s just say that these two are destined to be together, but must fight to get there.
The “scratching my head” moments was mostly due to some things that are, most likely, just a matter of preference and opinions. While I enjoy a sappy romance, there were moments when the couples’ endearments for each other started feeling less romantic and sweet and more contrived. At one point I think I stopped scratching my head and started rolling my eyes. This, again, is probably just me. I’m CERTAIN that the audience of teenagers that will read this book may very well find this sweet and genuine.
The only other real issue I had was that of some spelling and grammitical errors. But, even those didn’t distract me from the story.
I feel that Ms. Caudill, a first-time author, gave a remarkably memorable first-impression. And, I can’t help but feel like there is so much more to be revealed in future installments of this series. I’m really looking forward to it!
