Heather Webber's Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe is a captivating blend of magical realism, heartwarming romance, and small-town Southern charm.
Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Café.
It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the café and settle her grandmother’s estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her father’s side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody can’t stop talking about.
As the truth about her past slowly becomes clear, Anna Kate will need to decide if this lone blackbird will finally be able to take her broken wings and fly.

I don’t know what I expected from this book, but it wasn’t what I got.

I typically stick to the romance genre, even if that romance is just a small part of a historical, fantasy, or another kind of story. “Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe” didn’t really have much romance in it, but I didn’t miss it one bit!

Because “Midnight” is still about love. About the love of one’s family. The love of one’s roots. And the love of friends that feel like family.

Told from the perspective of two characters, I was completely immersed in both points of view and couldn’t decide which one I wanted to hear from next.

Anna Kate is a superbly strong character. She finds herself in a place unknown but blossoms from the first moment she arrives in Wicklow, Alabama. Anna Kate’s journey is unusual (which is why this is a magical realism novel) but incredible.

I won’t give away any more. I like for readers to be surprised. But, please, if you read any book this year–read this one. And, for what it’s worth; the audio version was amazingly done.
