Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can't seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.
The one person who ignites her temper more than any other is Cassian, the battle-scarred warrior whose position in Rhysand and Feyre's Night Court keeps him constantly in Nesta's orbit. But her temper isn't the only thing Cassian ignites. The fire between them is undeniable, and only burns hotter as they are forced into close quarters with each other.
Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.
Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance-and healing-in each other's arms.

I was seriously struggling to pick this book up. Not because I don’t just love SJM–but because I was never a fan of Nesta. And, you know, this book is a Nesta book through and through.

So when I finally picked it up (only because my teenage daughter was getting through the series and getting though it faster than I was) it took me a minute to love it. I think that sometimes, the beginning of books can be difficult for me if they don’t hook me right away. This one didn’t. Couple that with the hesitancy to get into Nesta’s story–I was kind of just taking this book a chapter a day to start.

However, once I got about a quarter of the way through, it really picked up and I Nesta started to not annoy me as much.

This one wasn’t my favorite of Maas’ books, but I’m glad I read it. Her character arc was kind of what I thought it would be. She has been fully redeemed–but she’s still got that Nesta attitude.

I’m still waiting on Tam’s redemption story–no one can convince me that he doesn’t deserve one.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life-working hard all day and partying all night-until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She'll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.
Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose-to assassinate his boss's enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he's offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.
As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City's underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion-one that could set them both free, if they'd only let it.
With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom-and the power of love.

Just like A Court of Silver Flames, I read this one to catch up to my daughter’s reading of SJM’s books. I don’t know why I waited so long to read this–I think I wasn’t sure if I’d love it.

I have to say that, based on this first book alone, Bryce is probably my favorite female character that Maas writes. She’s feisty, sarcastic, smart, and would do anything for her friends. That’s exactly the kind of character that I love.

This book was just–so good. From the beginning–where I was emotionally destroyed–to the end where we have Maas’ famous last 100 pages of revelations and action.

I had a really difficult time putting this book down. And that’s the indicator of a great book to me. Now that the third is out, I can’t wait to continue on with this series.

About Sarah J. Maas

Sarah J. Maas is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Throne of Glass series (Queen of Shadows, Book 4, will be out in September 2015), as well as the A Court of Thorns and Roses series (out 5/5/15).

Sarah lives in Bucks County, PA, and over the years, she has developed an unhealthy appreciation for Disney movies and bad pop music. She adores fairy tales and ballet, drinks too much tea, and watches an ungodly amount of TV. When she's not busy writing, she can be found exploring the historic and beautiful Pennsylvania countryside with her husband and canine companion.
