Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

This book has been on my Kindle for months. And I was terrified to read it because I watched the series last year and loved it. And, I usually love a book better than whatever movie or show it gets turned into. But, I was such a fan of the TV series that I just couldn’t imagine loving the book series as much.

I’m happy to say that I was SO wrong. As these things usually go, I appreciate both in completely different ways.

The book was so great in that I got so much more detail about these beloved characters. And even some deviations from the show all together.

I really, really enjoyed the main character, Diana. I feel like she’s a perfect blend of innocence, kindness, and strength. And she doesn’t just take things lying down. Which, given how much danger she seems to find herself in, is a good thing.

Matthew was also pretty wonderful. I do take issue with how secretive he is. And because we don’t get very much from his perspective, as the reader, I feel so lost in regards to him sometimes.

But, these two together are just the sweetest. And a star-crossed romance is one of my weaknesses.

Needless to say, I’ve already started the second in the series and can’t wait to finish!
