Tea & a Chat: You Might Be Obsessed With Books If...

Welcome to my new feature, Tea and a Chat! Where I share with you my (mostly) book-related thoughts, and what kind of tea I’m drinking!

So, you read a lot. Or maybe you don’t. But, chances are, if you’re here, you like books in some capacity. What that means is completely different for everyone. In our house, I’m the only one who really loves books. Try as I might, my kids’ like of books isn’t quite what I was hoping for… But, I digress…

It’s a bit of a joke in our house as to how much I love to read and how much of my free time is spent revolving around books. In my later years, I’ve learned the art of balance (which, coincidentally will be a future Tea & Chat topic) and have learned to put the important things as a priority… Such as sleeping, not skipping meals, taking time to really study the Bible… Those are just a few.

But, what does it look like to be truly obsessed with reading? Well, I have some thoughts…

You Read Several Books In a Week

I can’t tell you how many times my family has balked at the sheer number of books that I’ll read in a week, sometimes. There are weeks where I’m so busy that I’ll just read one, of course. But, admittedly, as of late, I’ll try to get through at least three in a week. Which means, on average, I can probably read about 100 books a year. That’s kind of insanity for me. I won’t waste my time telling you what my weeks look like with cleaning, play dates, and homeschooling four kids…

You Spend Time Taking (Looking at) Pictures of Books

Raise your hand if you’re a fan of bookstagram!!! Ever since I discovered Bookstagram (which, if you’re not aware, is just book-people taking pictures of books, and posting them to Instagram), I fell in love with the varied styles and designs of book pictures. I spend more time looking at them than actually taking pictures right now–mostly because I find inspiration in looking… But, I am embarrassed by how much time bookstagram takes up my time.

You Talk About Books A Lot

It’s a problem… I get excited about a new release of a book cover that is just beyond gorgeous and I HAVE to talk about it with someone! So, do I keep it inside to placate those nearest and dearest or do I just let it rip? Well, to the chagrin of my family, I will, occasionally share book tidbits with them, even though they could care less. Fortunately for me I have a very supportive family who listens…even if it’s just to humor me.

You Read More Than One Book at a Time

So right now, I have about three books that I’m reading and one that I’m listening to on Scribd. It’s ridiculous, really. And sometimes one or more will kind of get “forgotten” for a minute. But, I really do like being able to go back and forth between books that may be different genres since I’m a serious mood reader.

Books, or Book-Related Items, Make Up the Bulk of Gifts You Receive

So, Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s Day ends up being mostly Amazon gift cards or just books. Sometimes, I even get book-themed gifts like bookmarks, book mugs, or book teas! And I have to say, I LOVE it! I mean, I’m not the type that would ever not appreciate any gift that someone gave me… But, it’s definitely a wonderful thing when family and friends know you so well and they get you things that tickle that book-fancy.

You Have Book-Related Subscriptions

Right now I’m down to just two book subscriptions; Kindle Unlimited and Scribd. But, I’ve been subscribed to more in the past. Sometimes I just can’t get enough books!

You Have Several Unread Books On Your Bookshelf

I’m not going to pretend that every time I just “HAVE TO OWN” that book that I pick it up and read it right away. No, there are several times that I get the book and it goes right on the bookshelf…And stays there…Unread. For awhile. I’m totally ashamed, yet totally won’t ever stop.

You’ve Been Late Somewhere, To Finish Your Book

You’re reading, reading, reading…It’s a great part to the book, and next thing you know hours have slipped by and you are having to race around to get out the door. Don’t lie. If this hasn’t happened to you; you know someone who it has happened to.

You Never Went to Sleep Last Night

I won’t even lie and pretend that there haven’t been days that I’ve run on empty. Sometimes I’m reading a wonderful book and I keep telling myself that I’ll just read one more chapter…And then one more chapter turns into the whole dang book.

You Carry a Book Around With You

Yup. I do it. I always have a book in my bag. I purposely carry tote bags that are big enough for all the essentials; hair brush, make-up, first aid supplies, and a book. Okay, truth time: I actually own a Book Beau that holds both a book and my Kindle. It’s ridiculously large.

You’ve Forgotten to Eat While Reading

I’ve, literally, gone all day, up until dinner, without eating due to being busy and then picking up a book and forgetting all else. Let me be clear: I wasn’t even hungry. So, everyone else was fed, but I just wasn’t feeling it. Why eat when reading can sustain you?

And this one, for giggles…

You’d Rather Read Than Have Sex

I was asking for opinions about what it means to be obsessed with books and got this one. I almost didn’t include it because, well, this has never happened to me and I can’t honestly understand it. BUT, I think I had to include it because it’s the most hilarious response I’ve gotten and I just know some of y’all qualify for this one!! C’mon…Admit it! We’re all friends here!

Alright, y’all, I want to hear… Based on this list, how obsessed with books are you? And, if you’ve got more ideas of what it means to be obsessed, please let me know!

  1. Oh yes, totally obsessed. I’m not sure how many books I read in a week on average, but I AM usually reading 2-3 books at once. I have tons of unread books on my shelves, I love bookish gifts, and I almost always have a book or Kindle with me.

    • Haha!! I know that probably happens to a lot of women! I get it… When the book is really good, you just don’t want to put it down! Thanks for commenting!

    • Okay, this makes me feel better! Every once in awhile they pick up a series that they really enjoy… Here’s hoping that that keeps up in their older years! Thanks for commenting!
