Violet is the princess of Neyr, the third of the Nine Realms of Amera. At least, she was until the day came when Violet was to demonstrate her abilities to the people and solidify her place in Ameran Society. The citizens of Amera have extraordinary abilities, from living on the ocean floor to flying in the air. But no one can turn back time. When the unthinkable happens, tearing her heart and her family in two, Violet flees and is unable to escape a tidal wave of events that brings her face to face with forgotten truths buried for millennia. Only the discovery of a thousand lifetimes may provide the key to her return home. When old enemies arrive on the shores of Neyr, distrust and prejudice resurface. Secrets begin to explode all around Violet, setting her world on fire, and those she loves fall victim to a terrorists' plan to eradicate their enemies. But Amera stands in their way, and with no mercy, the enemy is willing to go through the innocent to get what they want. Violet turns to her best friend Lily, and a few unexpected new friends, who band together to save what they can of her realm, and the rest of Amera. But in the storm that has turned her world upside down, will Violet be able to overcome the nightmare of her past in order to save the future of everyone in Amera, and perhaps the world?

This month has been SO HARD for me and reading! I honestly don’t know why. I have more time than ever now to read due to some things going on at home… But, I just keep getting distracted.

But, I can say that picking up Power Divided was not a chore, however!

Plot

From just reading the synopsis given by the author, I don’t think I had a firm grasp on what this story was going to entail. I knew that it would be sci-fi at the core, but really no more than that.

I have to say, it looks like a long book when you pick it up–but this one was an easy read for me because it was just so engrossing! The author did little in the way of telling the reader what was going on, and much more showing–which I always appreciate.

This was a very unique plot with, what seems like, more that the author has yet to unfold in the coming books in the series.

Characters

I have one issue. Just one. And, honestly, it’s probably more my dysfunction than anything else. I had a difficult time keeping up with all the side characters.

I’m not talking about the characters that Violet was close to… Mainly some of the other kings and queens that were interspersed throughout the story. I had to keep going back to the end of the book, where the author put a list of who everyone was… So, thank you, Ms. Behr, for doing that!

As for how I liked the characters–I really can’t say there was anyone I couldn’t stand. And that happens a lot for me.

I thought Princess Violet was a well-deserved heroine! She grew throughout the story and seems to be the kind of character I can get behind.

I loved Jane, her pet, and Hailey! Hailey was a totally welcome surprise! I love that we get to see the growth of an A.I. character, too!

Writing

The writing was wonderful! Honestly, I felt like all appropriate emotions were conveyed, characters were written in a way that made the reader love them, and there weren’t any overly-descriptive areas.

Pacing

The pacing was one of my favorite things about this. Because from page one, there wasn’t a dull moment in the story. I was constantly wanting to read more because everything got unveiled at a great pace!

Cover

I’ll admit it. I wasn’t blown away by the cover when I first saw it. I didn’t dislike it at all, but I think it took reading the book to really appreciate what the cover is representing. And so now, I’m totally on board!

About S. Behr

I love a good story, in all art forms. I have been a professional photographer for nearly 20 years and I had to learn to tell a story with a click of a button and capture the layers of emotion in a single image. Little did I know it was boot camp for writing.

Being an author was a childhood dream and as I got older it seemed to be a dream that grew further out of reach with each passing year. But with encouragement from a lot of friends, new and old, my husband being my biggest cheerleader, The Evolutionaries series has begun with Power Divided.

To keep me company during my writing bubbles are my husband and our fur babies. They love whatever I write, even if they can't read it but they don't always love the music I write to. We all have to make sacrifices! And I am still pinching myself ever since I found out, that,
recently I became a Featured Author. Power Divided will be in the Feb 15th Issue of Kirkus Magazine.
