EXCERPT:

“Don’t you understand that I’m the only one here who gives a shit about you?” he growls.

I try to shove him away, but he won’t let me go, so I slap him instead.

He releases me from his grasp, and I step back, watching him with a hawk’s eye. He touches his face with his hand, his fingers grazing his beautiful skin, and it’s at this moment that feels most vulnerable. Most afraid. Because whatever he’s going to do or say next isn’t good, and it’s my fault.

“I …” I stutter.

He comes toward me, and I stumble backward until the balcony is right behind me and there’s no way to flee. He’s got me cornered, and his eyes predict thunder, but I’m afraid I can’t handle the electricity.

I close my eyes, expecting the inevitable.

Instead, he grabs my face with both hands … and he kisses me.

He fucking kisses me.

And I don’t even fucking pull back.

What the hell?

His lips smash into mine, and he ravages me without holding back. I’m helpless to stop it—not because I can’t, but because my body doesn’t want him to stop. His tongue dips out to lick my lips, coaxing me to open my mouth and let him in. I do, without hesitation, and he claims my mouth and tongue like it’s always belonged to him.

I’m completely stunned. I can only stand here and allow him to conquer my mouth, even though it makes no sense. I should hate him for putting me through all this. I should push him away and fight back. But I don’t … and I hate that more than I hate anything.

In a moment of clarity, my lips unlock from his, and I lean away, staring at him because I can’t believe that just happened.

I’m not exactly the kissing type … but that was amazing. And wrong. So fucking wrong, I might’ve even liked it.

“I told you I only want you. It’s the truth,” he whispers, his voice heady and sultry. My lips still tingle from his kiss, and I can feel the excitement surging through my body. Goddammit.

“I don’t give a damn if you slap me. I probably deserved it.”

Anomalies Playlist...

We write to music, so each of our characters had his/her own sound track. As we built characters, we gave them each a playlist and a genre of music they preferred. This helped us with building their motivations, flaws and overall arcs. It’s a trick which was passed down to us and we recommend it. A lot of actors do this when they get a complex role...they will create a soundtrack specifically for that character. Here are our character playlists:

Keeva: Strong Femme: (we couldn’t confine her to one genre) Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift, Lorde, Liz Phair, The Breeders, The Distillers, L7, Bishop, Pink, M.I.A. Amy Winehouse, Madonna, Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin

Kai: Hip Hop: Drake, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Jay Z, Eminem, T.I., Notorious B.I.G.

Calix: Early Punk: The Ramones, New York Dolls, Sonic Youth, The Clash, The Velvet Underground

Sobek: Pagan Metal: Ensiferum, Graveland, Eluveitie, Obtest, Primordial, Skyclad, Enslaved, Amorphis

Taj: Jazz: Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Big Joe Duskin, Esther Phillips, BB King, Nat King Cole, Jimmy Blanton, Benny Goodman

The Ilex Sisters: Showtunes: Hamilton, Rent, Next to Normal, Les Miserables, Hair, Serial Killer Barbie, Wicked, Mamma Mia! Avenue Q, Caberet

Inelia: New Wave: Morrissey, Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, Devo, The Pretenders, The Cars

Blue: Alternative Rock: Lou Reed, Sex Pistols, Violent Femmes, Sound Garden, The Cure

Genesis: Latin Alternative: Molotov, El Gran Silencio, Café Tacuba, Ska-P, Curanderos, La Vida Boheme

Lachlan: Classic Rock: Grateful Dead, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Creedance, Clearwater Revival, Rolling Stones

We both love music and probably had just as much fun putting together the character playlists as we did the actual characters.

The spicy scent of Jake’s cologne overrode the aroma of grilled meats and casseroles Gabriella’s relatives had spent all day preparing. Jake rested his elbow on the bar beside her, brushing his muscular forearm against hers and sending ripples of awareness to her core.

Who was she kidding? There was no distracting herself from the biggest distraction of them all.

“I think there are still a few guys you haven’t danced with yet.”

Of course Jake would go straight to pushing her buttons.

“I’ll have to take care of that, won’t I? Gab’s brother, Niko, is looking awfully hot tonight.” Niko was the epitome of a Greek heartthrob. Tall, dark, handsome, and as touchy-feely as the rest of Gabriella’s warm and loving family. He was also a shameless flirt.

Jake ground his teeth together, nearly paralyzing her with a blistering stare.

“I haven’t seen you dance all night. What’s the matter? Not into sexy island girls? Because I’m pretty sure that guy over there by the tree bats for the other team.” She enjoyed taunting the lion, even if she didn’t want to get too close. Her pulse beat wildly, and her fingers ached to grab him by the collar of his dress shirt and yank him down for what she knew would be an incredibly hot kiss. She tried to keep from dropping her eyes lower, but she was no match for the enticing ever-present bulge beneath his zipper. The one that became even more prominent when they were near. And damn, she liked knowing she had that effect on him.

He leaned in close, his warm breath coasting over her cheek. “I’m not into dancing, but if you keep looking at me like that you might find yourself getting up close and personal with more than you can handle.”

She lifted her eyes to his, which had gone coal black, and she swallowed hard against the lust threatening to pour out her mouth. Addy was used to controlling every interaction and reveled in holding her own and taking what she wanted where men were concerned. Or at least she always had, until the King of Hotness standing next to her came into the picture. Jake definitely threw her off her game. Lately, when they were together, she caught herself wondering if what she was experiencing were actual emotions rather than impulses. That was one thing that had kept her from taking their flirting to the next level. His relationship to her best friend was the other. But boy did she want to cross that line. It had been way too long since she had been with a man, thanks to Jake. Every time she came close to satisfying the urge to feel the weight of a man pressing down on her and get lost in the throes of passion, goddamn Jake swam into her mind, stealing her focus and killing the moment. Her fantasy had become her own personal cockblocker.

In an effort to reclaim the upper hand and prove he did not rattle her, she dragged her eyes over his chest again and said, “I have yet to meet a man who comes close to being what I can handle, much less more.”

The edge of his lips twitched as if they might quirk up, but he clenched his jaw, making the muscles beneath his dark scruff jump. He shifted his eyes away just as Niko headed toward them with a warm and inviting smile, making those jaw muscles work double time.

Niko nodded at Jake and offered his hand to Addy. “What kind of brother would I be if I didn’t dance with my sister’s beautiful best friend? Care to join me?”

“I’d love to.” Addy reached for his hand, taking pleasure in the tension rolling off of the man who had yet to ask her for a single dance but had no trouble inviting her into his bed.

Josh & Anna and Gabe & Claire: Review

Title: Josh & Anna and Gabe & Claire
Author: Eliza Freed
Publication Date: Nov. 15, 2016
Find: Amazon | Goodreads
Other Books by Author: Forgive Me | The Devil's Playground | Full Share

No marriage is perfect.

Josh and Anna Montgomery are trying to have a baby. Well, Anna is. Josh is making the minimum contribution necessary, and it’s ruining their relationship.

Gabe Hawkins is trying to survive the wild ride that is life with his wife, Claire. It’s passionate everywhere but in their bedroom.

For these four friends, the difficulties of their marriages are camouflaged by hazy happy hours, extravagant vacations, picturesque weddings, and sleeping in. The possibilities of their youth are wilting in the light of their waning twenties, and on one fateful night, four friends become two. Survivors become lovers. Truths are told, and nothing seems like forever anymore.

Eliza Freed graduated from Rutgers University and returned to her hometown in rural South Jersey. Her mother encouraged her to take some time and find herself. After three months of searching, she began to bounce checks, her neighbors began to talk, and her mother told her to find a job.

She settled into corporate America, learning systems and practices and the bureaucracy that slows them. Eliza quickly discovered her creativity and gift for story telling as a corporate trainer and spent years perfecting her presentation skills and studying diversity. It was during this time she became an avid observer of the characters she met and the heartaches they endured. Her years of study taught her that laughter, even the completely inappropriate kind, was the key to survival.

She currently lives in New Jersey with her family and a misbehaving beagle named Odin. As an avid swimmer, if Eliza is not with her family and friends, she'd rather be underwater. While she enjoys many genres, she is, and always has been, a sucker for a love story…the more screwed up the better.

Often times I underestimate a book based on its cover or description. It happens pretty frequently, actually. I did it here with Josh & Anna and Gabe & Claire.

It's not that I didn't think this book would be as good as it was. It's more that I expected another light, fluffy, romance read. Instead I got a much more complicated, nebulous story.

I'll admit that I had no idea what this story entailed exactly going into it. At about halfway through I realized that I needed to take all formerly-developed opinions and crush them. I'm not entirely sure that I'm going to stop thinking about this book for quite some time.

Josh & Anna and Gabe & Claire is in no way a fluffy romance novel. While there is romance involved, it's not what you'd call a "conventional" romance. That's not a bad thing, however.

Ms. Freed definitely did something different with this story. She made characters that are so multi-faceted and esoteric that it's impossible for me to compare this work to anything else.

The two main characters (I'm hesitant to give their names) go through something so dreadful that just imagining it makes me sad. But, at the same time, because of the unfortunate event that takes place, there's a hope for these two that the reader envies. It's a second-chance.

I'm not going to give anything away because I believe that half of why I enjoyed this story so much was that it took me by surprise. So, I'm just going to say that Ms. Freed knows how to write. She knows how to pull the reader into a story and then pull the rug completely out from under them. Even though I had some idea as to what this would be about, I really didn't comprehend the emotions it would evoke.

That's not to say it was perfect. There were a couple of parts that I think I had to kind of suspend belief for, but--it's fiction. That happens.

All-in-all, I'm encouraged by the fact that I can still be stirred and surprised in this day-and-age of regurgitated material.

EXCERPT:

I love Malika and Harper. They make me happy. They really do. But there’s something about being with them that makes me feel lonely too. I can never really be myself with them. I can’t really be myself with anybody. It’s ingrained in me to lie, to stick to the cover story and blend in no matter what. And I feel guilty about that. Because they think they know me so well. They think because they can finish my sentences they know everything about me. But they only know Reagan MacMillan; the quick-talking, tough girl I created. Sometimes I wonder which parts of my personality are really me and which ones belong to the pretender.

But with Luke, it’s different. There’s nothing forced or strategic about our friendship. He’s gotten to see glimpses of the real Reagan. And that scares the shit out of me. Because I know how quickly it could all be torn away from me. How quickly I could be torn away from him. There’s no such thing as a happy ending for a girl like me.

“Come on, Reagan,” Harper says quietly, glancing over her shoulder to make sure Luke is still out of earshot. “You guys are so cute together. He broke up with Hannah months ago. I don’t know what you’re waiting for. I can just tell by the way he looks at you he—”

“Harper,” I interrupt as her words compress my lungs, making each breath labored and painful. I don’t want to hear this. “He doesn’t look at me like anything. I don’t want to ruin our friendship.”

“You know some things are worth ruining,” Harper replies, reaching out to touch my arm with her fingertips, her nails painted darker than my gray cardigan. “You can’t tell me you haven’t at least thought of starting a relationship with him or maybe—”

“There is no relationship,” I cut her off again, pulling my arm away a little faster than I meant to. I snap new gloves onto my hands, pick up the scalpel, and slice into the frog’s heart. “Next stomach.”

“Next stomach?” Harper repeats, scrunching her forehead.

“Next subject.”
