Favorite Friday: Tiger's Curse by Colleen Houck (5/5 Stars)

The last thing teenager Kelsey Hayes thought she'd be doing over the summer was meeting Ren, a mysterious white tiger and cursed Indian prince when she learns she alone can break the Tiger's curse, Kelsey's life is turned upside-down. The unlikely duo journeys halfway around the world to piece together an Indian prophecy, find a way to free the man trapped by a centuries-old spell, and discover the path to their true destiny.

TIGER'S CURSE is the first installment in what will be five books. This, like some of the other books that I've read, was something I purchased for my Kindle because it was .99 cents. I really didn't expect to love the book as much as I did. The premise seemed great, but basically the same paranormal romance-y, ooey-gooeyness that I'd read before.

When I first bought this book it was a couple of years ago and the cover looked like the picure on the left. Now, Ms. Houck has herself a publisher and the story is much the same, and still fantastic!

First off, Kelsey Hayes, the main character, is absolutely one of my most favorite characters in any book. She is a sweet, fun-loving, vulneralble, but also strong, tenacious, and altogether very human and relatable. I found myself, while not always agreeing with her every choice, totally understanding of why Kelsey made them.

Ren, the lovable, sometimes incorrigable hero, is soooo swoon-worthy. Seriously. Ms. Houck made him sensitive and charming, yet not lacking in the manliness department.

I think what impresses me, also, about this book is that it's grounded in an already existing belief-system but Ms. Houck has obviously done her homework. There is SOOOO much information but it's given in such an interesting way that I found myself wanting to know more about Indian culture. I think that's what a good book does. It leaves you wanting more.

Read this book and get ready to want to buy the next!

Bourne by Lisa T. Bergren (5/5 Stars)

The River of Time Series--a Top 10 Pick for over 20 YA book bloggers in 2011! If you like romance, adventure and a dose of medieval Italian culture, you'll love WATERFALL (book 1), CASCADE (book 2) and TORRENT (book 3). Hint: They’re not just for teenagers.

BOURNE, a novella (1/3 the length of a normal novel), picks up right where TORRENT left off...Find out what has happened to men returning from the battle, gravely wounded, to the Betarrinis, fighting for the men they love, and just who is hunting them next...

Well, if you check here or here, you'll see my reviews for WATERFALL, CASCADE, and TORRENT. And when you read THOSE, you'll see how adament I am that this is one of the BEST series out there. Ever. Hands. Down.

I thought that TORRENT was it. I read it thinking, "Man, what a great ending!" And then Ms. Bergren gave us "RIVER FOLK" some more. And I'm so glad she did, no matter how much I wish this book was the size of a full novel. But, hey, I'm not complaining.

BOURNE picks up right where TORRENT left off. So, all our medieval knights are returning after a battle and we find that things aren't as great as we'd hoped. Poor Gabi.

But, don't be discouraged, because Ms. Bergren does what she does best, and takes a seemingly hopeless and devastating situation and turns it around. This isn't to say that the books can't continue. Because they definitely can. But, I'm not sitting in front of my iPad doing all I can to not scream and scare my children.

What I love most about this novella is that we get a little more Lia and Luca. They are just so sweet together! And, I think it's fantastic that we get to know Luca a little bit better. He really is a tease with a huge sensitive side. I can't resist that. And, I'm hoping Lia can't either. So, for those of you Lia and Luca fans, this one will make you happy. After the Gabi/Marcello story (which STILL isn't over), it's nice to see these two get their time in the spotlight. Their romance is a completely different kind than Gabi and Marcello's. And I'm enjoying it thoroughly.

So, Ms. Bergren, if you read this, PLEASE... Keep writing more Lia, Luca, Gabi, Marcello, and Rodolfo!!! I will continue to be a HUGE fan!

My Rating: 5/5 Stars(DUH!) :)
